Makin’ Mead

Brewing mead is a great creative outlet for me. I have the basic recipe the same and just modify the fruits and types of honey I use. I’ve never ruined a batch (which is really easy with wine, beer, and cider).

Here’s my latest mead, all racked and almost ready to bottle. My friend Lois was my mead protége for this round. She watched my videos on mead making and wanted to make her own batch. Her batch is the one on the left – a raspberry mead. Mine is blueberry.

For today’s new batch I decided to do a ginger mead. Ginger is one of the most common additives to basic mead (which is just honey, water, and yeast). Jill and I have been on a ginger kick and she’s been researching all the neat stuff you can do with it. Today she bought a whole pound of it!

As usual I used two pounds of honey – this time just basic clover honey.

My requisite blog rant: Notice the “sweepstakes” label on the SueBee honey? To see if you won anything, you have to go to their website and type in the code. I actually did this. But before you see if you won, they collect your personal information – address, phone number, name, and email. I see more and more companies trying to do this in devious ways. Then of course they sell your information and spam you. It works out really nicely for them. You fail, SueBee.

Anyway, this picture is of the ginger mead ready to go. I’m curious to know how strong it will be, but like all brewing much patience is required. I won’t get to taste the finished product for about two months.
