The Simpson’s Movie Review

Ugh. This movie was awful. It was recommended by a friend and just goes to show how subjective art/entertainment is. One person may love it, another may hate it. For instance, I love Mr. Bean (I got the box set for Christmas this year). My sister-in-law absolutely hates the show. Then there’s the legions of men who can quote Monty Python and the Holy Grail (I’m one of them) and the rest of the world, who for whatever reason can’t seem to appreciate good British comedy from the 1970’s.

That said, I couldn’t stand this movie. Neither Jill or I liked it at all. First of all, the effects were distracting. The Simpson’s is a cartoon – it’s not supposed to have 3D imaging. It’s like they went out of their way to make it seem more realistic than it should. I don’t know all the technical terms here, but if you have seen the movie you will know what I mean.

Secondly, several characters are… out of character. Marge uses coarse language several times, and allows Bart to. She also leaves Homer, which seems completely unlike the Marge we all know. Bart gets mushy and decides he likes Flanders better as a father, and then gets drunk on whiskey. Again, this is hard to pinpoint in other characters, but this is the overall impression I got.

The plot stunk. It seemed like it was stretched from a sitcom-length episode to a feature film length. A new character was introduced for Lisa to fall in love with, but we miss out on many of the “normal” characters.

The only good thing this movie had going for it was the satirical, slapstick jokes I have come to expect from the show. The Spider-Pig song was hilarious.

I also realize I’m reviewing a movie that came out a couple years ago, but hey, maybe I just needed to vent.
